Personal Profile

Dr Raghavendra Sidaginamale is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. At Woodlands Hospital in Darlington, he sees NHS, insured, and self-pay patients. His special interests are in hip and knee replacement.

After completing medical school from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in the South of India, he undertook post-graduate training in Orthopaedics from the prestigious Manipal Academy of Higher Education, India. He then moved to the United Kingdom and worked at East Lancashire Hospitals, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham and London Hospitals for his basic surgical and orthopaedic training. Here, he completed the membership exam (MRCS) from The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

He then undertook a 6-year structured higher surgical training programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics from one of the best deaneries in the country - North East Deanery. During this time, he passed the fellowship exam in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr & Orth) from The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

Following this, he undertook a prestigious 12-month Hip and Knee Replacement fellowship from Auckland, New Zealand. He gained excellent experience in:

  • Complex primary hip and knee replacement
  • Periprosthetic fracture (fractures around hip or knee replacements) fixation

As well as this, he also learned more about the use of technological advances such as artificial intelligence, computer navigation and robotic-assisted arthroplasty in aiding the management of hip and knee patients.

Dr Sidaginamale has a very sound research background and has dedicated years in pursuing a PhD degree in Bioengineering from Newcastle University. He was awarded a Doctorate degree for his work on hip replacements. He worked closely with national and international experts in the field of arthroplasty, including surgeons, bioengineers, histopathologists, radiologists and the implant industry. Through his research work, he has had numerous national and international presentations and publications in high impact journals. The outcome of the research has had a global impact on the management of metal on metal hip replacement patients. He continues to be involved in conducting and supervising high-quality research, including hip and knee implant analysis.

He works as a full-time consultant at The University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. Here, he undertakes one in six weeks acute trauma on call for treating general orthopaedic trauma patients, one full day of elective hip and knee outpatients and one full day of elective hip and knee operating. He also takes the role of the Clinical Audit Lead for orthopaedics. He is actively involved in promoting local, regional, national and NICE audits and also quality improvement projects that are aimed at improving safe and effective patient care. He is passionate about teaching and training and is a faculty on the fellow of Royal College of Surgeons exam preparatory courses. He is also an adult trauma life support instructor. Dr Sidaginamale is a keen mentor for junior and senior orthopaedic trainees, by offering professional support, guidance and help to shape their career.

He believes in shared decision making with his patients and is committed to delivering the best quality of patient care and experience for all of his patients.

He lives in the North East with his wife and two young children, and enjoys spending quality time with his family and friends.
